Preparing Your Body for IVF: A Holistic Approach

IVF is a medical marvel, but your body is not a machine. Preparing yourself physically and mentally in the 2-3 months leading up to an IVF cycle can profoundly impact your experience and your outcomes.

The 'Pre-Trimester' Matters The 90 days before egg retrieval are crucial because that is the timeline for a resting follicle to mature into the egg that will be collected. What you expose your body to during this time matters. 1. Nutritional Foundation Shift heavily toward a Mediterranean-style diet. It is proven to reduce inflammation, which damages egg DNA. Focus on: - Antioxidant-rich vegetables (berries, leafy greens, brightly coloured peppers) - Healthy fats (extra virgin olive oil, avocados, walnuts, chia seeds) - Lean protein (fish, poultry, beans, lentils); reduce red meat and processed meats. - Minimize refined sugars and alcohol completely. 2. Targeted Supplements (Under Medical Guidance) Standard prenatal vitamins (with folic acid) are a given. Depending on your diagnosis (e.g., age, PCOS, low AMH), Dr. Ankita may recommend CoQ10 (Ubiquinol), Vitamin D, Omega-3s, or Myo-inositol. Never self-prescribe DHEA or melatonin. 3. Toxin Reduction (Endocrine Disruptors) Chemicals in our environment can mimic hormones and disrupt the delicate IVF balance. In the months before IVF: - Switch to BPA-free plastics and glass storage containers. - Choose phthalate-free, fragrance-free cosmetics and cleaning products. - Wash all produce thoroughly to reduce pesticide exposure. 4. Movement and Blood Flow Moderate exercise (walking, swimming, light cycling) increases blood flow to the reproductive organs. However, once stimulation injections begin, switch to very gentle movement (like walking). Intense exercise or twisting (hot yoga) poses a risk of ovarian torsion as ovaries enlarge. 5. Stress and the Cortisol Factor Stress does not cause infertility, but the process of IVF causes immense stress. High cortisol levels can interfere with reproductive hormones. Find a practice that actively lowers your heart rate: mindfulness meditation, deep breathing exercises, or restorative yoga.
