Varicocele and Male Infertility in Kolkata — A Treatable Cause of Poor Sperm

Varicocele is the most common correctable cause of male infertility — affecting up to 40% of infertile men. Yet many men are not told about it, or are told incorrectly that it does not matter. At Maatritva IVF in Newtown, Kolkata, we evaluate every male partner thoroughly, because treating a varicocele can sometimes eliminate the need for IVF entirely.

Understanding This Condition

A varicocele is an enlargement of the veins within the scrotum (similar to varicose veins in the legs). It causes the temperature in the testes to rise, which impairs sperm production and increases DNA damage in sperm. Varicocele is found in 15% of all men and 40% of men presenting with infertility. Microsurgical varicocelectomy ties off the enlarged veins, reducing testicular temperature and allowing sperm parameters to improve over 3–6 months.

Symptoms & Diagnosis

Men with a palpable or ultrasound-confirmed varicocele alongside abnormal semen analysis (low count, poor motility, high DNA fragmentation), couples with male factor infertility, and men with testicular discomfort or a sense of heaviness in the scrotum.
