Understanding This Condition
A varicocele is an enlargement of the veins within the scrotum (similar to varicose veins in the legs). It causes the temperature in the testes to rise, which impairs sperm production and increases DNA damage in sperm. Varicocele is found in 15% of all men and 40% of men presenting with infertility. Microsurgical varicocelectomy ties off the enlarged veins, reducing testicular temperature and allowing sperm parameters to improve over 3–6 months.
