Uterine Fibroids and Fertility in Kolkata — When and How Fibroids Affect Conception
Fibroids are extremely common — present in up to 70% of women by age 50 — and the vast majority do not affect fertility at all. But certain types, locations, and sizes of fibroids can significantly impair conception or implantation. Dr. Ankita Mandal at Maatritva IVF in Newtown, Kolkata helps you understand which fibroids need treatment and which can be safely left alone — avoiding unnecessary surgery.
Understanding This Condition
Uterine fibroids (leiomyomas) are benign (non-cancerous) growths of the uterine muscle. They range from millimetres to several centimetres. Types most relevant to fertility: (1) Submucosal — grow inside the uterine cavity (most impactful on fertility, even small ones can affect implantation), (2) Intramural — within the uterine wall (affect fertility if large or if they distort the cavity), (3) Subserosal — outside the uterus (least impact on fertility).
Symptoms & Diagnosis
Women with heavy, prolonged periods, pelvic pressure, bladder frequency, or back pain found to have fibroids on ultrasound. Also any woman with fibroids who is planning pregnancy, especially if fibroids are submucosal or intramural with cavity distortion.

Treatment Options
- 1Step 1: Classification scan — 3D ultrasound or MRI to map fibroid position, size, and uterine cavity impact
- 2Step 2: Hysteroscopy — gold standard for evaluating submucosal fibroids inside the cavity
- 3Step 3: Hysteroscopic myomectomy — removal of submucosal fibroids through the cervix (no incisions, day procedure)
- 4Step 4: Laparoscopic myomectomy — keyhole removal of intramural or subserosal fibroids
- 5Step 5: Recovery and uterine healing — typically 2–3 months before attempting conception
- 6Step 6: IVF if needed — after myomectomy, with improved implantation environment
