What to Expect During the IVF Egg Retrieval Procedure
The egg retrieval (ovum pick-up or OPU) is the surgical peak of the first phase of IVF. It is completely normal to be nervous about it, but understanding exactly what happens can significantly reduce anxiety. It is actually a very quick, day-case procedure.

Fertility Specialist
Before the Procedure:
You will take your 'trigger shot' exactly 34-36 hours before the scheduled retrieval. This timing is absolutely critical to finalize egg maturation. You will arrive at Maatritva IVF fasting (no food or water for 6-8 hours).
The Anesthesia:
You will not feel pain during the procedure. At Maatritva IVF, retrievals are performed under short, intravenous general anesthesia (or deep sedation). You will be completely asleep, but because it is not full intubation, you will wake up very quickly once it is over.
The Procedure (Step-by-Step):
1. Positioning: You are positioned as you would be for a routine pelvic exam or transvaginal ultrasound.
2. Cleaning: The vagina is cleaned thoroughly with sterile saline to prevent infection.
3. The Needle: Dr. Ankita uses a transvaginal ultrasound probe equipped with a very fine, hollow needle guide. The needle passes through the vaginal wall directly into the ovaries.
4. Aspiration: The fluid inside each mature follicle is gently suctioned out and collected in test tubes.
5. The Embryology Lab: The tubes are immediately passed through a window to the embryologist, who examines the fluid under a microscope to locate and collect the eggs.
6. Duration: The actual procedure takes only 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the number of follicles.
The Recovery:
You will wake up in the recovery room. Mild cramping (like period pain) and light spotting are normal. You will rest for 1-2 hours while we monitor your vital signs. Once you are fully awake, we will give you something to eat and drink, inform you of the 'egg count', and you can go home.
Post-Retrieval Care at Home:
Rest for the remainder of the day. Use a heating pad and paracetamol for cramps. Stay hydrated with electrolyte fluids. Severe pain, heavy bleeding, or difficulty urinating require immediate medical attention.
